David Passiak is a former scholar of religion turned social strategist and technology entrepreneur. He has spent the last 20 years working on the interrelationship between emerging communications technologies and grassroots community building, hence the tagline for Social Meditate – where innovation meets insight.
Most recently he is author of The Disruption Revolution – Your Innovation Handbook. Featuring thematic interviews with over 20 visionary leaders, best selling authors, CEOs and founders of the most innovative companies in the world. The most comprehensive and in-depth collection of perspectives on innovation compiled into one volume.
David earned several degrees in Religious Studies (B.A. Michigan State University, M.A. Arizona State University, M.A. Princeton) before dropping out of his Ph.D. program at Princeton to work in emerging communications and social media strategy. He has held leadership positions at prominent tech startups (Heavy, Spongecell, Visible Technologies), served as Senior Director at M80 WPP, where he ran social media for Volkswagen (including launching Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and VW’s first company blog), and currently is Founder of Social Meditate and Co-Founder of Aptise. He lives in Brooklyn.
David’s graduate coursework focused on religions of the Americas, with a particular emphasis on how the adoption of emerging communications technologies tended to coincide with periods of religious, political and cultural/social innovation, from the “Great Awakenings” of the 1700s and 1800s catalyzed by innovations in the printing press, through the Civil Rights and Sixties counterculture movements accelerated by the mass adoption of radio, television, film and music.
Simply put, as people found new ways to share and communicate ideas, they re-imagined conceptions of community and life in general. David quickly realized that web 2.0 technologies would have the same impact as the trends he had been studying with the best scholars in the world, and made a decision to leave the Ivory Tower to be part of the next revolution of innovation and awakening.
A practitioner of insight meditation since 1993, David has also traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia and India, and most recently finished writing his first book Red Bull to Buddha: Innovation and the Search for Wisdom. David was also a DJ on Princeton University’s award winning radio station, WPRB, ran a rare LP business called Funk NYC, and produced about 80 music events featuring artists like A-Trak, Jacques Renault, Rich Medina, and Metro Area
David is particularly interested in how we can maintain a cohesive balance during periods characterized by rapid innovation. Social Meditate is both a strategic consulting business and “mini agency” as well as a media company producing content for web, social, books and eBooks.
